How I Fell In Love With My Birdbath As Lawn Garden Décor
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios
There it was standing, in the middle of my little green paradise, my lone lawn garden décor: a birdbath.
On sunny afternoons, birds flock around its marbled corners, egging each other on as to who should take the first dip. And once a brave soul decides to test the waters, the others follow suit with apparent excitement and glee.
The happiness, of course, is not confined to the avian visitors.
I, my wife, my kids, and any houseguests who were fortunate enough to view the afternoon spectacle would have nothing but smiles. The birds interacting with the solitary lawn garden décor which has become the centerpiece of my backyard (and my lot, quite actually) is indeed a sight to behold. And though this is a regular occurrence every afternoon during the summer months of August and September, the sight remains just as refreshingly blissful as the first time I saw them arrive.
My birdbath is not as lavish as you might be thinking, dear friend. It stands around 4 feet tall, supported by a column half that length with a diameter of around 10 inches. The basin is slightly bigger, with a diameter of 14 inches. Maintaining it is not hard at all. I just make it a point to supply the basin with fresh water everyday. Believe it or not, the birds refuse to come close to anything that resembles dirty, stagnant water. They're impeccably, and obsessively, clean creatures, I tell you!
It's funny to think that when I was in the process of mulling about what lawn garden décor to purchase some years ago, I was strongly considering a pergola. Then again, I realized that my backyard wasn't that big to begin with. I shifted my attention to birdhouses. The salesman, who was kind enough to assist me despite my many queries, told me that birds do not immediately take home on birdhouses. "You need numerous birdhouses," I remember him saying. "Birds are quite wary when they see a single hole. Chances are, a pair will never reside on the structure."
Not only are our feathered friends obsessively clean, they're compulsively cunning as well, it seems.
Hence, the lawn garden décor of my choice boiled down to one option: the birdbath. I must admit, at first I was not happy with this decision. I wanted a pergola, or a birdhouse. And I was forced to settle with a birdbath because my first and second options were impractical.
That mentality is history, of course. Nowadays, and shallow as it may seem, I consider my birdbath as one of the best investments I have ever made.
Don't believe me?
Come over and see my smile every afternoon.
